The General Pattern

Many policies cover damage when a tree falls on a covered structure such as the house, a garage or a fence, and may pay some cost to remove the tree from it. A tree that falls and hits nothing is often not covered. A dead or diseased tree you left standing may not be covered either.

What Is Often Not Covered

  • Routine removal or trimming
  • A tree that fell but only damaged the yard
  • Stump grinding
  • Damage from neglect

What to Do After a Tree Falls

  1. Make everyone safe and call utilities if wires are involved
  2. Take many photos before anything is moved
  3. Call your insurer and ask about limits and the deductible
  4. Get a written quote or invoice from the crew
  5. Keep receipts for emergency work, like tarping

Policies vary, so read yours and ask your agent. See fallen tree removal and cleanup and emergency tree removal.
